Pre implantation genetic testing (PGT)

Pre implantation genetic testing (PGT) is an early form of prenatal genetic diagnosis where abnormal embryos are identified, and only genetically normal embryos are used for implantation.

Patients having a history of recurrent implantation failure, missed abortion or any genetic disorder, are considered for PGT (Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing).

A few cells are removed from the trophectoderm of the embryos individually by Laser Assisted Hatching method, and are sent to genetic labs for testing by highly advanced techniques like NGS or Microarray.

There are three types of PGT:

  • PGT-A
  • PGT-M
  • PGT-SR

PGT-A:

In PGT-A, embryos are tested for abnormalities in the number of chromosomes. Embryos with the correct chromosome number are known as euploid. Embryos with missing or an extra number of chromosomes have less chances of developing into a healthy baby thus, resulting in implantation failure.

PGT - A

PGT-M:

In PGT-M, embryos are analyzed for any specific genetic disorders, such as mutations that are known to be present in both parents. In this case, if any member of the family is carrying a genetic disorder, then it is risk for the child or the child may have more chances of carrying the same gene.

PGT - M

PGT-SR:

In this type of PGT, embryos are tested for any rearrangement in their own chromosomes such as a translocation or inversion. So, there are chances for increased risk to produce embryos with missing or extra pieces of chromosomes.

PGT - SR

The results for the test take around 15-20 days to arrive. Only PGT normal embryos are selected to be transferred in the woman’s body.

After 14 days from embryo transfer, pregnancy test is performed to check for implantation.
