Ovum Pick Up Procedure
An ovum pick-up (OPU) procedure is a minimally invasive procedure that involves extracting eggs from the ovaries. It is done under ultrasound guidance.
Procedure
- The patient lies down in lithotomy position and receives a mild sedative or general anesthesia
- An ultrasound probe guides a thin needle into the ovaries
- The needle punctures the follicles and extracts the fluid and eggs
- The fluid is collected in test tubes and sent to an embryologist to look for oocytes.
- Embryologist looks for mature oocytes and do ICSI later on.
